Reading List

Little Princes by Conor Grennan
In search of adventure, twenty-nine-year-old Conor Grennan embarked on a yearlong journey around the globe, beginning with a three-month stint volunteering at an orphanage in civil war–torn Nepal. But a shocking truth would forever change his life: these rambunctious, resilient children were not orphans at all but had been taken from their families by child traffickers who falsely promised to keep them safe from war before abandoning them in the teeming chaos of Kathmandu. For Conor, what started as a footloose ramble became a dangerous, dedicated mission to unite youngsters he had grown to love with the parents they had been stolen from—a breathtaking adventure, as Conor risked everything in the treacherous Nepalese mountains to bring the children home.

I can't tell you how much I loved this book! What makes it eve better is it's a true story!

My Story by Elizabeth Smart, Christ Stewart
On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

I have read both negative and positive reviews of this book. Did I think it was perfectly written? Not really but the book isn't about the writing. The book gives a very clear picture of what Elizabeth Smart went through and the strength she had to get through it. Read it!

Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain
When Jane Forrester takes a position as Grace County’s newest social worker, she doesn’t realize just how much her help is needed.  She quickly becomes emotionally invested in her clients' lives, causing tension with her boss and her new husband.  But as Jane is drawn in by the Hart women, she begins to discover the secrets of the small farm—secrets much darker than she would have guessed.  Soon, she must decide whether to take drastic action to help them, or risk losing the battle against everything she believes is wrong.
Set in rural Grace County, North Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of these two young women, seemingly worlds apart, but both haunted by tragedy.  Jane and Ivy are thrown together and must ask themselves: how can you know what you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it’s wrong?

I really enjoyed this book. In reading about the state-mandated sterilizations it made me think a lot about the freedom we should have over our own bodies.

Tutorial: DIY Sewn Notebooks and Journals

I am an avid journal keeper and list maker so it is probably no surprise to you that I love a good notebook. A few years ago I started making these little journals and notebooks. I actually sold them on Etsy for awhile but just didn't keep up with it. I decided why not just show you how to make them here.

All you need is paper, a cutting board and a sewing machine. Everything I always have on hand. Of course if you don't have a sewing machine I am sure you could hand sew the binding.

These instructions are for a 9x6 inch journal.

Step 1) Cut your cover to 12 x 9. Make sure to use heavy cardstock so it will hold up.

Step 2) Fold the cover in half so it measures 9x6 inches

Step 3) Take plain white printer paper and fold in half.

Step 4) Stack the plain white folded papers inside each other. I usually keep mine to about 10 pieces of paper making the notebook a total of 20 pages.

Step 5) Place stack of folded paper inside cover

Step 6) Sew down the fold in the middle to create the binding.

Step 7) Place a a label on the front cover.

And that is it! Easy peasy!

Go Cards!

Who else is excited that baseball season is here? I love this time of year!
As you can see, we root for the Cardinals at our house! Brody is still a little upset that his favorite player, Kyle Lohse was traded but I can still get him to watch the games with me about half the time. He is even learning all the players on the team.
I catch Sadie and Sammy watching the games, they seemed pretty intrigued by them. I don't blame them.

If you are a Cardinals fan I suggest you check out Manager, Mike Matheny's Blog! It is pretty good.

What team do you cheer for?

Scissors
Glue

Googly eyes

Step 1. Seal the envelope using the scissors or a letter opener cut a slit at the top of the envelope.

Step 2. Cut out the bunny ears. you can free hand them or use this pattern from Nestle Nesquick.
We used the pattern and traced them on to white and pink paper.

Step 3. Glue the ears on to the envelope with the opening at the top.

Step 4. Glue on googly eyes and a pink pom pom for the nose.

Step 5. Draw the mouth.

Spring Fling: Easter S'mores

Hello! Sara from the Homespun Hostess here with a quick Easter treat. I have included both the
EASTER S’MORES and the HOPPY EASTER 5” wide bag toppers free so you can create these too. I like to shop the dollar store for treats that can be repackaged. I found these adorable white chocolate bunnies and with just a little green “grass” and a cello bag made it look a little more like a boutique treat. Another fun one is Easter S’mores….because kids like s’mores all year long! We make our s’mores with bunny peeps as our marshmallows and chocolate eggs as our chocolate. They are cute as can be with all the goodness of a classic s’more. I hope you enjoy these easy treats for classrooms or the special kids in your life.

Easter Treat Bags

I want to share this cute way to package a little Easter treat. These carrot- shaped goody bags are the perfect way to package a little spring treat.

Brody loved filling these cute carrot baggies with Cheetos. Other ideas to fill them would be gold fish, jelly beans, Cheeze Its, etc. The bags are very inexpensive and because they are printed you don't have to use orange colored treats.
We will definitely be ordering more of these bags next Easter!

This review is based strictly on my opinion. Others may have a different opinion or experience with the product listed above. I was provided the sample free of charge by Oriental Trading Co and I provided my honest opinion. No other type of compensation was received for this review.

Spring Fling: Savory Spring Petal Pull-Aparts

Spring has sprung and I couldn't be more happy! I'm Yvonne from Tried and Tasty and I'm so excited that Dianna invited me to be here for the Spring Fling. When you think of spring what do you think of? I'll tell you what I think of: warmer weather, longer days, spending time outdoors, but most of all: FLOWERS! I have a thing for gardening. Mostly fruits and vegetables but also beautiful flowers. There's just something I love about getting my hands dirty and experiencing nature first hand.

Savory Spring Pull Apart Made with Rhodes Rolls // Tried and Tasty I was inspired to make these Savory Spring Petal Pull-Aparts by these Breadstick Blossoms that I made for Rhodes last Spring! Don't flowers just make you happy inside? I know I just love seeing the little starts popping out of the ground. Even more I love watching them grow in to beautiful and marvelous plants.

Here's what you'll need:
1 bag of frozen dinner rolls (regular, not Texas rolls), thawed but still cold Mayonnaise (amount depends on number of rolls you are making) Melted Butter Freshly shredded Parmesan Cheese Garlic Powder Dried Parsley Place mayo, cheese and butter in separate bowls. For each flower you will need 4 1/2 rolls. Take the cold, thawed, ball of dough, and cut in half. Dip the top half (of each half) into each bowl starting with the mayo, then the butter and finally the cheese. Form the center of the flower into a ball. Place onto a greased or silicone mat lined cookie sheet (cheese side up). Follow with eight petals placed around the center side-by-side. Sprinkle with garlic powder and dried parsley. Spring Fling: DIY Tissue Paper Flowers

Hello everyone, I'm so excited to be here at Whatever Dee Dee Wants! When Dianna asked me to guest post on her blog for Spring, I couldn't say no! My name is Katelyn & I blog over at Learning Creating Living, where you can find easy & inexpensive diy projects, fun crafts & delicious recipes, I hope you will stop by sometime & say hi! Today I'd like to share with you a simple & easy diy project, just in time for Spring!

For this project I bought a pack of pastel colored tissue paper at the Dollar Tree. I laid out the tissue paper I wanted to use, used a glass & traced the rim to get a circle.

I cut out the circles..

...& then used thumbtacks to poke a hole through the tissue paper to make the center.

For the stem I used twigs I had gathered for another project I used (see here) & pushed the thumbtack in the end of the twig.

After that I put the bouquet in a vase I had bought from Tj Maxx to finish off the look. I love how springy these flowers are & how easy they were to make! I don't think I will be able to look at tissue paper the same again!

Thank you for letting me share this diy project with you & thank you Dianna for letting me hang out on your blog today! You can find me here: Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Bloglovin & Pinterest.

Spring Fling: Green Super Smoothie and Chocolate Super Smoothie

Hello! My name is Raia, and I blog over at Raia’s Recipes  where I share all my allergy-free creations that pass the inspection of my four crazy kiddos. :)

I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful spring is here!  Along with the fresh blooms, park dates, and warm weather comes one of my favorite times of year: smoothie time! So when Dianna invited me to post to her “Spring Fling” event, I knew immediately what I was going to share. :)

With four kids in the house, I try to make my smoothies something that will not only taste good, but also provide much needed nutrients for their little growing bodies. These two “Super Smoothies” fill both those roles! Let’s unpack some of the goodness...

Beginning with the probiotic benefits of yogurt, I like to add water kefir to get some prebiotic in as well. Never heard of kefir? It’s an old school Russian drink made by fermenting kefir grains (don’t worry - they’re not actual grain) in either milk or water. You can learn how to make it over on my site. It’s super easy and contains even more helpful bacteria than yogurt!

On top of these two amazing ingredients I like to add bunches of fresh fruits and veggies. Avocado gives the smoothies their luscious thickness, while providing healthy fat and loads of potassium, and banana adds a good dose of fiber and manganese (good for healthy bones, liver, and pancreas). For a super-D-dooper (as my 7-year old says) dose of vitamins A, K, and folate, throw in some spinach! Or, for a sweeter treat, add in a little raw cocoa powder and honey.

Now, let’s make some smoothies!

Green Super Smoothie
1 c. plain yogurt
1 c. kefir
1 banana
1 avocado
2 large handfuls spinach
1 apple
1 t. vanilla (optional)
1 c. ice

Chocolate Super Smoothie
1 c. yogurt
1 c. kefir
2 bananas
1 avocado
2 T. cocoa powder
1-2 T. honey
1 t. vanilla (optional)
1/4 t. salt
1 c. ice

Both versions are simple to make, just puree everything in a blender and enjoy!
